Corrective lip surgery
For many people, full lips represent sensuality and beauty. Thin, narrow lips may quickly appear uptight. Lip correction is not just for women – men also seek cosmetic lip surgery.
Corrective lip surgery often involves „ironing out“ the small vertical wrinkles on the lips. After 40, targeted injections in the mouth area can be helpful for patients who are satisfied with their basic face shape but whose face appears older than it is because of wrinkles. Meanwhile, there are various techniques in existence that can rapidly produce the results desired when performed by an experienced professional.
Treatment options
Depending on the patient’s age and individual situation, there are various options for corrective treatment suited for the individual skin profile.
- The following are different types of corrective procedures:
Injections with various materials (for increasing the volume of the lips and/or evening out wrinkles)
- Abrasion (for evening out deeper wrinkles)
- Constructive surgery, such as the application of skin strips
- Laser treatment / Rhytec treatment
New products for injection treatments for wrinkles are constantly coming onto the market. Your doctor will inform you about these options during your consultation. The most commonly used procedures are given here.
Injections
Hyaluronic acid:
As we increase in age, the upper lip becomes elongated, the red area of the lips becomes narrower, and small, vertical wrinkles appear. A minor outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia can easily correct the lips. The surgeon removes a strip of skin under local anesthesia, placing it on the lip for support. Duration of treatment: 10 minutes
Dermabrasion and lining of the lips using the body’s own tissue are often combined with a facelift or a mini facelift.
New Fill
New Fill is a gel made from lactic acid which is used particularly for deeper wrinkles. It is metabolized into the body’s own material and lasts approximately one year. For long-lasting results, the treatment should be repeated after two weeks. Duration of treatment: ten to 15 minutes.
Fat
Augmentation with the body’s own fat is recommended for patients wishing to increase lip volume. The fat, e.g. on the stomach, is removed under local anesthesia with a special tube, cleaned, and injected into the lips. The remaining fat is conserved and may be used for up to two years. Duration of treatment: Fat removal 30 minutes, injection ten minutes.
Aquamid
Aquamid is a gel injected directly under the skin, where it immediately produces volumizing results.
Fuller lips, more prominent cheekbones, smoothing of wrinkles at the corners of the mouth can all be obtained with this filling substance which is similar to human tissue. Immediately after the injection, the area treated can be manually formed to obtain the patient’s desired contour. The gel remains at the injection site. Treatment takes 10 minutes.
Collagen
Collagen is the most well-known product for correcting wrinkles and other skin defects. Collagen is obtained from bovine protein. Therefore the patient must undergo an allergy test prior to injection. Collagen is broken down by the body over time, so additional treatments are necessary. Duration of treatment: ten to 15 minutes.
Dermabrasion, Rhytec treatment, Laser treatment
Using a special abrasion tool or device, dermabrasion is performed on the upper layer of the skin. The underlying layers of skin, sweat and sebaceous glands, pigment cells and blood vessels remain unaffected. Scabbing will occur, but once the new skin has grown underneath, the scab will fall off. The success of this treatment is aimed at the texture of the skin. The stronger the skin undergoing dermabrasion, the better the result. The skin should not be exposed to UV radiation for six weeks. Duration of treatment: 30 minutes.
Constructive surgery
As we increase in age, the upper lip becomes elongated, the red area of the lips becomes narrower, and small, vertical wrinkles appear.
A minor outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia can easily correct the lips. The surgeon removes a strip of skin under local anesthesia, placing it on the lip for support. Duration of treatment: 45 minutes A soft silicone implant can also be used for augmentation.
Visibly beautiful results
All of the injections described are performed under local anesthesia or with an anesthetic ointment and can be done on an outpatient basis, so that you may return home immediately after the operation.
However, the patient should expect swelling in lip area which will disappear after one or two days.
Slight reddening or blue discoloration lasting one to two days are not uncommon. After treatment, cooling packs can quickly reduce swelling. Immediately after the procedure, the mouth may appear asymmetrical. However, after three days, the patient may once again go out in public. The main disadvantage of injections is the varying longevity of the effects, depending on the material. The cosmetic effect lasts for three to twelve months on average. Treatment be repeated as often as the patient desires.
„Constructive surgery“ leaves a very thin scar on the red area of the lips after treatment, which can be covered up with lipstick. After corrective lip surgery, the lips may be swollen for several days. However, the long-term success obtained will help the patient forget the temporarily inconveniences.
