Facial implants
In order to correct a poorly formed, receding chin, an implant (usually made of silicone) fitted for shape and size is used. This implant is either placed on the outside, just under the tip of the chin, or it can come from the oral cavity. After a successful operation, the implant cannot be seen or felt.
An excessively strong or prominent chin can be reduced by cutting underneath the chin if the soft tissue is affected (cleft chins). However, if the bone is affected, it must be broken in a surgical operation under anesthesia. These operations are performed by our experienced jaw surgeons.
How is a cheek augmentation performed
If you feel that your cheekbones are not as prominent as you would like them to be, you may consider a cheekbone support procedure. A small incision is made in the oral mucous membrane through which an implant (usually made from silicone or another material) is placed. The implant is affixed directly onto the cheekbone. It grows in with the tissue cells and integrates harmoniously with your face. After a successful operation, neither the implant not any external scars can be seen or felt. Implantation of the body’s own fat can be used to improve facial contour. This outpatient procedure is performed with local anesthesia. However, the result is somewhat temporary and the procedure must be repeated. For patients who feel their cheeks are too voluminous, fat from the cheeks can be removed with an incision into the mucous membrane in the cheek. This outpatient procedure is also performed with local anesthesia.
Post-treatment
A bandage is placed on the corrected cheek and/or chin form.
For several days, the affected part of the face will remain swollen. After approximately three to four days, you will be able to go out in public once again. Slight loss of skin sensation may occur, but will usually disappear within a few weeks. The final result is usually visible three months after the operation.
Results
The placement of implants usually harmonizes the facial features. However, the basic shape of the individual patient’s features is also a determining factor.
Corrective procedures for the cheeks or chin may last from one to three hours, depending on the scope of the operation. The operation can usually be performed on an outpatient basis under local, semi- or full anesthesia.
Although the greatest of care is taken, complications may occur in some cases during or after surgery:
-Bleeding or infection-
Bruising, swelling-
Infections from the foreign material used during the operation or arising from the removal of the foreign material,
-In rare cases, the mandibular nerves may be injured, leading to loss of sensation
-Encapsulation of the implant
Important to note before and after the operation
- Certain medications that cause thinning of the blood (e.g. Aspirin, Aspro, ThromboASS, Thomapyrin, Marcoumar, etc.) must be avoided one week before and after the operation
- Do not eat anything for at least six hours prior to the operation
- Place cooling substances onto the treated parts of the skin after the operation We also recommend anti-inflammatory lozenges such as Wobenzym®.
- Elevate the head after the operation in order to accelerate reduction in swelling.
- Avoid cigarettes and alcohol.
- Use great care when brushing teeth after the operation.
- Avoid vigorous chewing. For the first three days after the operation, eat only liquids and soft foods.
- Patients with incisions in the cheeks or mouth should gargle with sage tea or another disinfectant solution after every meal.
- The patient should refrain as much as possible from speaking and smiling after the operation
